A global classics restaurant with a seasonal Southern flair completes “The Friendly Hotel” as it opens for lunch and dinner service.
ATLANTA, GA (July 27, 2021)– Inspired by the building basement’s original occupant, Mrs. P’s Tea Room – a 1950s restaurant that emerged as Atlanta’s first openly LGTBQ-friendly bar nearly a decade later – Wylie Hotel brings history back to life with the opening of Mrs. P’s Bar & Kitchen, opening July 22 for breakfast, lunch and dinner service.
Mrs. P’s Bar & Kitchen is set to be a destination for both locals and travelers alike with a sunroom distinctive parlor bar and semi-private banquettes – a perfect place to relish in the neighborhood’s rich history and celebrate a community-driven establishment.
Focused on providing comfortable, familiar fare, “Tucked Away” at Wylie Hotel, breakfast features items including avocado tartine (shaved prosciutto, poached eggs, wild arugula), and breakfast taco (nduja sausage, crushed eggs, beans, salsa, crema) while weekend brunch will add steak tartar (pickled shallots, mustard, watercress, toasted rustic bread) and almond croissant French toast (chocolate, mascarpone, blueberry). For lunch, seasonal offers include Moroccan watermelon salad (harissa, olives, feta, pistachio, mint) and red beans & rice arancini (roast garlic aioli, house hot sauce), for dinner, highlights such as okra “devils on horseback” (pancetta, goats cheese, candied jalapeno glaze) and BBQ lamb lollipops (black & white BBQ sauce, mustard, fennel) round out dishes to dream about. As Mrs. P’s was originally known – for its boiled peanuts – boiled peanuts with kombu, chili, orange & pepper will be on offer, alongside grilled peanut hummus and house pimento cheese, with breads & crackers.
Partners Kim King Associates, Ross Hotel Partners and Mainsail Lodging & Development came together to revive the former 551 Ponce de Leon Hotel, in hopes to restore the property to its roots – a homelike bed stop. Built in 1929, the building originally opened as the Garner-Wallace Hotel, but closed in 1933 due to the Great Depression. Shortly thereafter, it reopened as the 551 Ponce de Leon Hotel, until transitioning to Ponce Student Suites and eventually falling into disrepair. Kim King Associates purchased the building in 2019 and joined forces with Mainsail Lodging & Development and Ross Hotel Partners, with the core focus of giving a nod to each of the hotel’s past lives at every turn – incorporating small touches to bring its century-long stint on Ponce de Leon Avenue to the forefront.
“We pride ourselves on our guests being able to have an intimate yet inclusive experience, and Mrs. P’s offers just that,” said James Green, General Manager of Wylie Hotel. “The menu showcases modern classics with a southern twist, with an elevated flair.”
With renovations led through the partnership of local architect, Stevens & Wilkinson, and Atlanta-based interior design firm Pixel Design Co., Mrs. P’s Bar & Kitchen extends the rest of the hotel’s intent of bringing its original character back to life, combining historic elements with modern upgrades.
Wylie Hotel is located at 551 Ponce de Leon Avenue. Mrs. P’s is open seven days a week for breakfast service from 7 – 10:30 a.m. The restaurant is currently open for lunch service from noon – 2 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday and dinner service from 4 -10 pm on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday and 4 – 11 pm on Friday and Saturday. Beginning Labor Day Weekend, Mrs. P’s will be open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner, also launching weekly Sunday Brunch on September 4. To make a reservation, call 877-684-5023.
